ELEVEN
The Roof
As tastefully decorated and delicately landscaped as anywhere else in the building, the well-lighted Roof Deck was also a surprisingly intimate space. Taking up only a small portion of the roof, there were couches and tables positioned around a well-stocked bar. The centerpiece of the space was an elevated putting green, no doubt a nod to the buildingâs recently deceased namesake, owner, and most famous resident.
âItâs not generally available,â Lila explained. âItâs used mostly for corporate functions, private parties, that sort of thing.â
Walking in, it took only a moment to see that from all outward appearances, the zombie apocalypse had come to this roof in the middle of a wedding. A decorative arch garlanded with flowers was strategically placed opposite the bar, where it no doubt would have provided breathtaking photographs of the bride and groom and the skyline beyond. On a table to the right was an uneaten cake. Strewn along the bar and on some of the tables were half-filled glasses of colorful liquid alongside ashtrays choked with half-smoked cigars. Silver trays of finger food were sitting abandoned here and there.
With no danger apparent, I finally holstered my gun. The tension released, most of the group took the opportunity to collapse into the comfort of the cozily arranged couches. The women removed their burdens, dropping SpongeBob knapsacks on the couches beside them. After she sat down, Lucy pulled the still unresponsive boy close.
Raphael walked behind the bar. Taking a moment to choose a high-end bottle of something or other, he carried it and some glasses over to a couch and started pouring. Edwin stayed on his feet, though. I watched him go into a knapsack and grab a flashlight, and when I saw him turn it on and start heading east, I grabbed one too and headed west.
Outside the Roof Deck, shielded from view by tall ivied trellises, was the working roof. Positioned throughout were the large pieces of machinery required to run a modern high-rise of this sort: generators, A/C units, vents, and God knows what else. I poked my head around the bigger ones and found nothing; wherever I saw one, I pulled upon the doors to make sure they were locked.
While walking, amidst the sound of the whipping wind, I heard an occasional buzzing noise from high above, along with what sounded like a lawnmower engine. I glanced up a few times and saw nothing, before smiling at my own silliness and shaking my head, chalking it up to the lingering aftereffects of the gunblast near my ear. A lawnmower engine?
The few times I did allow my gaze to shift outward, toward the city itself, I saw much that was familiar. Lights still burned in the high rises and skyscrapers of midtown, though perhaps fewer this night than on a normal evening. Red lights still flashed on and off, on and off, atop tall buildings in warning to aircraft. The black void that I knew to be the lush green jungle of Central Park still appeared as mysterious and inviting as ever.
